The shift from Greek to Latin, and later to modern Western languages, did more than change vocabulary — it changed theology. Words like justice, penalty, and atonement entered Scripture where healing, life, and restoration once stood. In the West, righteousness came to mean moral perfection; in the East, it means alignment with Gods order. Salvation became escape from punishment; in the Orthodox sense, it is renewal of being. Subtle translation errors turned a living mystery into a legal system. The danger is not only academic. A man who reads through the lens of guilt and transaction begins to imagine God as an accountant. His conscience grows servile rather than filial. The Gospel becomes a document of fear instead of freedom. The cure is to return to the sources — the Greek text, the Fathers, the language of healing. When Scripture is read with the mind of the Church, words recover their depth, and the heart recovers its peace.
